Creating a Google My Business account

A Google My Business account is a free solution to getting your store in Google search listings and on Google Maps. Those features alone make the process worth it. However, there is more. Google My Business allows you to keep your hours updated, allows customers to call your store directly from a Google search, and answer customer questions. All of this comes at no cost to you. Let’s get started.

  • Begin by signing into your Google account. Don’t have a Google account? No problem! Start by creating one at this link. accounts.google.com/signup. We recommend creating an account with YourBusinessName@gmail.com.
  • Then navigate to business.google.com
  • Click “add your business to Google” and enter your business name
  • Select your type of business. If needed, you can always change this later.
  • Enter your address and phone number. This is very important for verifying your business.
  • Add your website URL. If you don’t have a website, click “I don’t need a website”.
  • Verify your business. Verify with an automatic phone call from Google with a verification code. You can also verify with a postcard sent from Google to your business address.
  • Done! Once your business is verified, it will automatically appear in Google maps. In a couple of weeks, your store should appear in a traditional Google Search for users searching for your business.

Optimize your Google My Business account

  • Add photos. Help new customers find your location by adding photos of the exterior of your store. Let them know what to expect by adding images of the interior of your store and products you carry.
  • Update for COVID-19. Google has created a special field in Google My Business for COVID-19 related information. Use this to update your hours or offer a new service like curbside pickup.
  • Encourage reviews. Getting reviews is a great way to show new customers that you are a store they can trust, and it also gives you an opportunity to address negative reviews. This will help with customer retention and show new customers your great customer service.

This is just one way to build a digital presence online, but it is one of the most effective for communicating with customers in your area.
