How to Calculate Urine Output From Diaper Weight in Adults

Use the Product Dry-Weight chart below to quickly calculate a patient’s urine output. Weigh the wet disposable brief, underwear or pad on a standard scale, hanging spring scale or wheelchair/standing scale.

  1. Determine product and size, and use that information to find the product’s dry weight on the chart below
  2. Zero your scale to recalibrate and weigh the wet product
  3. Subtract the dry weight from the wet weight to calculate urine output

The weight in grams also equals the volume in milliliters (ml).

The Formula to Calculate Urine Output from a Diaper

The urine output formula is the wet weight of the diaper minus the dry weight of the diaper. The difference weight in grams is also the Volume mL/cc of urine output.

How Do You Measure Urine Output?

Urine output can be measured using any of these three methods.

  • Manual Measurement of Urine Output: This is done by collecting urine in devices such as bedpans, commodes or other types of collection containers and then pouring into a measuring container and noting the volume in mL (milliliters) at eye level.
  • Urinary Catheter Measurements: Measuring urine output from a catheter is done by reading the volume of output directly from markings on a catheter’s collection bag or measurement chamber.
  • 24-Hour Collection of Urine Output: This method involves collecting and measuring every single urine sample produced over a full day (24-hour period) in a specialized urine collection container. The 24-hour method is considered a strong method because it offers a comprehensive snapshot of the person’s kidney and bladder functions throughout an entire day.
