How Should an Adult Diaper Fit?

An adult diaper or tape-tab brief should fit so that it feels snug and comfortable, following the contours of the body with no seams or gaps between the material and the skin. An adult diaper or adult brief should feel tight enough that they offer a feeling of security and coverage throughout, but not so tight that there is any skin being pinched, there is skin redness or restricted blood flow in the legs. If adult protective underwear or briefs are too loose and the material loses contact with the skin at any point, this will cause the product’s built-in containment features, like leg cuffs or elastics around the leg openings, to not work properly and allow liquid or stool to leak out.

How Do You Know What Size Diapers to Get for Adults?

To help you know what size diapers to get for adults, you can get started by referring to the convenient Tranquility Disposable Brief Sizing Chart listed above. Remember to use a tape measure to measure in inches the widest part of your body between waist and hip. Use this hip size number to determine product size.

For sizes greater than XL, obtain an accurate hip measurement for best fit.

You should also read the sizing information located in the individual product web pages and descriptions, as they may add additional, specific notes about that product. For instance, the Tranquility® TopLiner® Booster Pads product description page has a special note about the differences between the “Contour” size and the “Super-Plus” size, with the latter featuring a full-fit design that works best with tape-tab briefs. The page also points out that the Super-Plus size works well with bariatric, or plus-sized products.

Lastly, the best way to know what diaper size to get for adults is to try a sample out for yourself! There is information on ordering low-cost samples on each Tranquility individual product page, or you can fill out a quick survey and receive a two-pack sample at no cost!

How Do You Know You Have the Wrong Size Adult Diaper?

As noted above, you will know if you have the wrong adult diaper size if the product is so tight that there is skin being pinched, there is skin redness or restricted blood flow in the legs. You may also start to feel heat on your skin in the area being squeezed by disposable underwear or incontinence briefs that lack the proper fit. If adult protective underwear, briefs or other incontinence products are too loose and the material loses contact with the skin at any point, this will cause the product’s built-in containment features, like leg cuffs or elastics around the leg opening, to not work properly and allow liquid or stool to leak out.

What Are the Largest-Sized Adult Diapers and Briefs Called?

The largest adult diaper sizes, typically sizes starting at 2XL and up, are technically or clinically considered “bariatric” sizes. Another name for bariatric is “plus-sized.” Bariatric or plus-sized ranges for a particular brand of adult diaper may go from 2XL to 5XL, or higher. Tranquility’s offering of bariatric briefs goes from 2XL (designed for people with a waist and hip size of 60″ – 80″ and weight of 250+ lbs), to our largest adult disposable brief of 5XL, designed for people with a waist and hip size of 70″ – 108″ and weight of 250+ lbs.
